December 2005 ‑ 97.0 hours on 26 days.
December 2004 ‑ 50.9 hours on 19 days.
Maximum sunshine in 24 hours ‑ 7.6 hours on 17th.

SUMMARY
Day temperatures for December averaged out to the
seasonal normal. However, a total of 19 ground frosts for the month reduced
the mean minimum night temperature for the month to well below the seasonal
average, making it the coldest since 1996. It was a relatively dry month
with an overall abundance of sunshine.
The month began on a windy note with a deep depression
centred over the U.K. Strong to gale force winds were in evidence on 1st and
2nd and there was heavy rainfall during the first three days. In fact almost
50% of the total rainfall for the month was recorded during this period.
There was little sunshine. From 4th, pressure began to rise. The winds
dropped but so too did temperatures and sunshine was hard to find. Following
some frontal activity during the night 7/8 heavy rain (10.1mm) was recorded.
High pressure began to dominate the weather scene on 9th. The weather stayed
dry, it was sunny on l0th and 11th but ground frosts became a nightly
occurrence. The weather continued in a calm mood with the 17th/18th the
coldest night to date with a minimum air temperature of ‑3.0°C and a ground
temperature of ‑6.2°C being recorded. Frontal activity during the night
18/19 brought the first rain for ten days (1.8mm). Pressure remained high to
give a quiet weather scene, albeit little sunshine, during the lead up to
Christmas Day which was cold but sunny (6.6 hours). The weather remained
cold and dry with heavy snow falls restricted to the east of the region.
There was a complete change in the weather overnight 29/30 with rain moving
into the area from the west (7.Omm). Winds reached near to gale force on the
coast and day temperatures reached double figures. The last day of the month
was mainly sunny with showers during the afternoon.
The rainfall total of 65.1mm was well below the seasonal
average of 75.54mm driest since 2001 (31.9mm).
The sunshine total of 97.0 hours was well above the
seasonal average of 62.3 hours. The second sunniest on record ‑ 2001 (115.1
hours).
The mean maximum temperature was almost on par with 'he
seasonal average of 3.7°C whereas the mean minimum of 2.2°C was well below
the seasonal average of 4.2°C ‑ the coldest since 1996 (1.9°C)

SUMMARY
Weather-wise
November could be divided into two contrasting halves. The first wet and
warm, and the second cold and dry. As a result the mean temperatures were
close to their seasonal averages. However, the first air and ground frosts
of the season were recorded, the most in a November since 1996.
The month
began with the weather very unsettled with frontal activity producing some
heavy rain on 2nd (17.9mm) accompanied by strong to gale force winds on the
coast. Strong to gale force winds were again recorded on the 3rd but
thereafter pressure began to rise to produce a day of maximum sunshine on
4th (8.2 hours). It stayed dry until 6th when 7.7mm of rain were recorded.
Day temperatures remained well above the average. The weather continued
rather unsettled with a fair amount of sunshine and the odd spot of rain but
staying mild through to the 10th which was dull with light rain throughout.
On 13th, the wind moved around to the two northern quadrants. There was a
noticeable drop in both day and night temperatures with the first ground
frost of the season recorded on night 13th/14th. The temperatures continued
to drop with the first air frost recorded during the night 16th/17th and the
maximum day temperature for the first time dropping into single figures
(8.8°C). On 18th, the weather became dominated by high pressure positioned
over the U.K. There followed an abundance of sunshine,, cold days, feeling
colder in the northerly winds, and an unbroken succession of ground frosts
through to the end of the month. Throughout the latter half of the month it
stayed dry until the 30th, when 2.8mm of rain were recorded during the
afternoon and evening. The maximum day temperature also moved into double
figures for the first time since 15th of the month. Wind direction also
moved around to south.
The rainfall total for the
month of 48.2mm was well below the seasonal average of 74.49mm.
The sunshine total of 114.4
hours was well above the seasonal average of 89.6 hours and the sunniest
November since 1996.
The mean maximum temperature
of 10.9°C was just above the seasonal average of 10.6°C and the minimum of 4.8°C
below the seasonal average of 5.9°C coldest since 1998.

October 2005 ‑ 124.6 hours on 25 days.
October 2004 ‑ 125.2 hours on 27 days.
Maximum sunshine in 24 hours ‑ 9.8 hours on 2nd.
January to October 2005 ‑ 1744.2 hours.
January to October 2004 ‑ 1762.5 hours.
SUMMARY
October was a warm month with both the mean maximum and
minimum temperatures well in excess of their seasonal averages. In fact they
were both on par with the figures for the month of June. It was also a wet
month with almost 75% of the months rainfall being recorded during the last
14 days. Sunshine fell just short of the seasonal average by three hours.
The month began with a cool northerly airstream
across the region. The weather was dominated by high pressure to the south
west of the U.K. resulting in a fair amount of sunshine for the first four
days of the month and, apart from a light shower on lst, it stayed dry. The
high pressure gradually moved away to the north east of the U.K. on 5th to
produce a cloudy day. It remained cloudy with some patchy drizzle on the 6th
but it was generally dry. The l0th was the best day of the month with light
balmy south easterly winds, a maximum temperature of 19.3 C, and wall to
wall sunshine (9.3 Hours). During the night 11/12 and again during the
afternoon of 12th frontal activity brought heavy rain to the area (13.9mm).
There followed three successive sunless days but it stayed dry. The
15th produced another glorious day, almost on par with the conditions
experienced on l0th. The 18th saw the start of a marked change in the
weather with the onset of strong winds and almost daily outbreaks of rain.
Frontal activity brought heavy rain to the area during the night 18/19
(14.3mm). The following day brought 9.1 hours of sunshine but apart from the
27th (8.7 hours), sunshine was a rare commodity for the remainder of the
month. The weather continued unsettled with frontal activity bringing heavy
rain to the area during the night 23/24 (17.8m). However, throughout
temperatures well above the average for the time of the year. The weather
continued unsettled to the end of the month with frequent showers of rain,
little sunshine, but a remarkable temperature of 18.7°C recorded on 27th ‑ a
record for late October.
The rainfall total of 91.3mm was above the seasonal average of 83.62mm.
The sunshine total of 124.6 hours was below the seasonal average of
127.9 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 17.1°C and minimum of
12.2°C were both well above their respective seasonal averages of 14.4°C and
9.1°C. The warmest October for at least 35 years.

SUMMARY
September was overall a very warm month with both the mean maximum and
minimum temperatures well above the seasonal average. It was also a
relatively dry month with rainfall well below the seasonal average. Sunshine
too was some ten hours above the seasonal average, albeit some hours less
than September last year.
The month began with high pressure dominating the weather scene. It was hot,
dry, and sunny. Following a hot, sunny, and humid day thunderstorms crossed
through the area during the late evening and night of 4th (7.6mm) although
most of the worst passed to the north of the area. The weather continued dry
and warm with a fair amount of sunshine. The weather became unsettled on the
9th. Sunshine was hard to find although it stayed dry and pleasantly warm.
Frontal activity during the early hours of the 15th brought to an end a nine
day sequence of dry weather (3.5mm) with further continuous rain in the area
during the afternoon of 15th (5.0mm). Throughout it remained reasonably
warm. On 16th, pressure began to rise to begin a warm and dry period with
plenty of sunshine. The 22nd was a sunny day albeit starting hazy after
early morning mist. The morning of 23rd was cloudy with frontal activity
bringing the first rain for a week to the area during the afternoon (1.1mm).
The weather continued somewhat unsettled with isolated heavy showers on 25th
(3.1mm). Continuing unsettled, the month ended on a wet note with frontal
activity producing heavy rain during the night of 28th (10.6mm) and again
during the early
hours of 30th (5.6mm).
The total rainfall of 41.9mm was well below the seasonal average of 58.49mm.
The sunshine total of 180.6 hours was well above the seasonal average of
170.5 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 19.7°C and minimum of 12.9°C were both well
above respective seasonal averages of 17.9°C and 11.7° C.

SUMMARY
August was overall a warm month with both mean maximum and minimum
temperatures around the seasonal average. It was a dry month for the most
part with sunshine well above the seasonal average with a mean daily total
of 9.1 hours. The month began with a trough of low pressure crossing the
U.K. resulting in a showery and dull day. The 2nd was all change with
sunshine and a rise in temperature. The weather turned cloudy on 6th but
returned to warm and sunny on 7th. It continued warm and sunny until 13th
when rain moved into the area during the afternoon and continuing into the
evening (6.5mm). The weather returned to warm, dry and sunny on 15th. During
the silent hours of the 19th frontal activity brought heavy rain to the
area. The rain continued throughout the morning (10.4mm) leaving a cool day
with a maximum, temperature of 18.0°C and no sunshine. The 20th and 21st
were both dry and sunny but frontal activity brought light rain to the area
on 22nd. The rain persisted for most of the day and there was no sunshine.
On 24th, a deep depression centred over Scotland. Rain and strong winds
associated with the warm front dominated the weather scene with winds Force
6 to 7 and 9.4mm of rain. The weather continued rather unsettled with
showers and sunny periods. On 27th, the weather became warm and sunny and
continued through to the end of the month to make the August Bank Holiday
(27th to 29th) one of the sunniest and warmest on record. A total of 34
hours of sunshine was recorded during this period.
The rainfall total of 42.8mm was below its seasonal average of 49.63mm and
did little to improve the long term water shortage.
The sunshine total of 282.5 hours was well above the seasonal average of
232.2 hours. The sunniest August since 1998.
The mean maximum temperature of 21.3°C and minimum of 13.3°C were both close
to their respective seasonal totals of 20.1°C and 13.6°C.

January to July 2004 1218.3 hours.
SUMMARY
July, was overall a sunny month and much to the dismay of the water
authorities, was heading for another exceptionally dry period. However, the
heavens opened up on the 24th and for the next four days the area was
subjected to some heavy downpours of rain to produce a total of 80% (40mm)
of the month's total. Still not enough to satisfy the water authorities. The
mean maximum temperature was near to the seasonal average but the mean
minimum was well above the average resulting, as in the previous month, some
uncomfortable warm nights.
The weather for the month of July as in the previous month got off to a
rather dismal start. With barometric pressure dropping over the U.K. the
weather was mostly unsettled with a distinct lack of sunshine, rather cool
temperatures, and occasional showers. The weather continued unsettled until
the 9th when pressure built up over the Azores (The Azores high). As a
result the weather became hot, dry, and sunny. On 13th, sea fog persisted
throughout most of the day to interrupt what could be termed a mini heat
wave. The hot, dry, and sunny weather reappeared on the 14th and continued
through to the 20th when the first rain since the 8th was recorded (0.7mm).
The 21st and 22nd were both warm and sunny. Pressure dropped on 23rd and
associated frontal activity brought heavy rain to the area during the silent
hours of 24th and continuing through to the end of the morning (16.1mm).
There was an almost repeat performance during the silent hours of 25th
(12.9mm). The weather continued unsettled through to the end of the month
with some heavy sharp showers and little sunshine.
The rainfall total of 49.3mm was just above the seasonal average of 42.57mm
but it did little to alleviate the water shortage.
The sunshine total of 272.1 hours was well above the seasonal average of
239.1 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 20.8°C was marginally above the seasonal
average of 20.2°C while the mean minimum of 14.4°C was well above the
seasonal average of 13.6°C.

SUMMARY
Although there was a disappointing start to the month, with the first
week generally producing below normal temperatures and little sunshine, the
weather gradually improved and overall the month of June was warm, at times
hot, very dry, with well above the average sunshine. The hottest part of the
month was between 17th and 28th with the temperatures moving into the
eighties on 20th and 28th. Throughout this hot period refreshing sea breezes
kept the local area reasonably bearable. Spare a thought for London where
the temperature on the 19th and 27th exceeded 90°F.
The month arrived on a dull, damp, note. It continued rather un-seasonal
with a lack of sunshine and rather cool at times. High pressure centred over
the U.K. on 7th heralded the approach of more seasonal weather. There
followed a dry and mainly sunny period. On 15th, low pressure moved into the
north of the U.K. and associated fronts brought rain to the area during the
morning (5.9mm). Pressure however began to rise on 16th and thereafter it
became warm to hot and very dry. Night temperatures also rose to
uncomfortable levels. The weather continued in this vein through to the 24th
when the weather eventually broke with a thunderstorm during the afternoon
of 24th. The hot weather returned on 26th to continue the mini heat wave to
eventually break with a thunderstorm on the evening of 28th. The month ended
on a cooler note.
The rainfall total of 22.7mm was well below the seasonal average of 48.79mm,
the driest since 1996 (19.1mm). With the centre of the two thunderstorms by
passing the local area the total rainfall collected was just 5.4mm.
The sunshine total of 248.2 hours was well above the seasonal average of
229.2 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 19.8°C and minimum of 12.6°C were both well
above their respective seasonal averages of 17.8°C and 11.4°C.

evening of 16th when continuous light rain (0.9mm) brought an end to a
cloudy day. Between 18th and 24th there was a very windy and relatively wet
period. Force five winds were the order of the day and also, during the same
period 58% of the month's rainfall was recorded. On 19th, weather fronts
associated with low pressure to the mid‑west of the U.K. brought a wet cool
day (10.0mm) to the area. There followed rather unsettled weather with the
odd shower. Temperatures rose on the evening 0 of 26th continuing over into the
27th to produce the warmest day of the year ‑ 20.8°C. The weather continued

SUMMARY
The month of April ran true to form with some cold weather, some warm
weather, and some showery bursts of rain. The outcome left the total
sunshine hours some ten hours below the seasonal average albeit there were
two successive days, the 18th and 19th, when Bognor Regis was the sunniest
place in the U.K. with totals of 13.0 and 13.3 hours respectively. The
rainfall was just about on par for April and the day and night temperatures
both a degree above their seasonal averages.
The month began warm and dry with a fair amount of sunshine. A foggy start
on the 1st gave way to sunshine during the afternoon. Pressure began to drop
on 6th and the weather became a lot cooler. Pressure dropped further to
bring showers to the area during the afternoon and evening of 7th (7.9mm).
Day temperatures dropped to single figures on 8th. Fresh northerly winds
made it feel bitterly cold at times with an air frost recorded on night 8/9.
Frontal activity brought rain to the area early morning of 13th (5.3mm).
Pressure remained low to produce rather unsettled weather. Frontal activity
brought rain to the area during night 17/13 (4.7mm). There followed two
sunny days on 19th and 20th to produce a total of 26.8 hours of sunshine.
Frontal activity on night 22/23 continuing during the morning of 23rd
resulted in a dull St.George's Day (7.6mm) of rain and no sunshine. The
weather continued unsettled with the odd shower and low amounts of sunshine.
Frontal activity brought rain to the area during the afternoon and evening
of 28th (5.6mm) after a sunless day. It remained mainly cloudy to the end of
the month with the warmest on 30th at 16.5 0 C.
The total rainfall of 44.8mm was close to the seasonal average of 46.37mm.
The sunshine total of 182.4 hours was ten hours below the seasonal average
the second month in succession to be below the average.
The mean maximum temperature of 12.4°C and minimum of 6.5°C were both
roughly a degree above their respective seasonal averages.

SUMMARY
March was generally a dull month with sunshine well below the norm. It was
also a dry month with rainfall substantially below the average. There were
strong hints in the media of the possibility of impending drought conditions
this Summer. The day temperatures took up to the middle of the month to cast
off their Winter chill and begin to register double figures.
The month began where February left off, cold with at times a bitterly
northerly wind. There were sleet showers on 4th. On 6th, high pressure to
the west of the U.K. began to dominate the weather scene. There followed a
variable amount of sunshine and ground frosts became a nightly occurrence.
It continued mainly dry and cloudy and day temperatures began to gradually
rise. Between 7th and 10th, a total of just one hour of sunshine was
recorded. Winds remained generally light. From 14th, day temperatures rose
to reach 11.0°C on 16th. Night temperatures also moved above freezing on
14th. On 18th, an anti cyclone stabilised itself over the U.K. bringing with
it Spring like weather. There was dense fog on the littoral on the morning
of 19th and again during the same evening. Pressure dropped on 21st and
frontal activity during the night 21/22 brought rain to the area (7.4mm),
first rain of any significance since 1st (10.4mm). There was heavy rain
followed by dense fog (10.1mm) during the silent hours 23/24. The Easter
week-end (25-28) turned out weatherwise better than expected with Easter
Saturday producing a temperature of 14.7°C and a total of 9.9 hours of
sunshine.. The month ended on a dull note with three successive sunless
days.
The rainfall total of 44.7mm was well below its seasonal average of 60.44mm.
The sunshine total of 104.6 hours was well below the seasonal average of
131.0 hours. The second dullest since 2001 71.9 hours and 1976 88.9 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 9.5°C and minimum of
3.9°C were both close to their respective seasonal averages of 9.2°C and
4.0°C.

SUMMARY
Temperature wise, February was a month of two halves. The first relatively
mild for the time of the year, the second becoming progressively colder as
the month wore on to produce the coldest night of the Winter on 28th.
Nevertheless, the mean temperature for the month averaged out a little above
the seasonal average. It was an exceptionally dry month with the recorded
rainfall around one third of the seasonal average. Sunshine hours were above
the seasonal average thanks to the contribution of 70% of the grand total
during the second half of the month.
The month began on a dull note, albeit a dry one, with the first sunshine
worthy of note appearing during the afternoon of the 6th. During this period
high pressure was firmly anchored to the west of Ireland. The weather on 7th
and 8th was mild and sunny almost Spring like. Some light frontal activity
brought rain (4.6mm) to the area during the night 10/11. The 12th was a
sunny day but it was getting noticeably colder. The wind moved around to the
northern sector and the temperature began to fall further to produce a sleet
shower on the morning of 13th. Ground frosts became a nightly occurrence.
High pressure established itself to the west of the U.K. on 14th. There
followed plenty of sunshine. The temperature continued to drop and the cold
north to north easterly wind at times kept the ambient temperature below
zero. There were snow showers during the evening and night 21/22. The
weather continued very cold through to the end of the month with the hardest
ground frost of 6.2°C recorded on 28th. Throughout the cold period although
the area was subjected to the occasional snow flurry, snow falls of any
consequence were confined mainly to the east of the U.K.
The rainfall total of 15.9mm was well below the seasonal average of 45.91mm
2004 managed 15.1mm.
The total sunshine hours of 99.3 was above the seasonal average of 88.3
hours. The sunniest since February 2000, 111.2 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 7.4°C and minimum of 2.7°C were both above
their respective seasonal averages of 7.2°C and 2.4°C.

Maximum sunshine in 24 hours 7.7 hours on 24th.
SUMMARY
January was overall a milder than normal month with both the mean maximum
and minimum temperatures well above the seasonal average. There was a noted
absence of air frosts just the one. Rainfall was well below the average and,
unlike many places in the U.K. where rainfall figures were high, at no time
did a daily rainfall recording reach double figures. Sunshine hours were
well above the seasonal average with some good sunny spells more than making
up for the shortcomings of last month.
The month began with the weather in a dull mood with a day of intermittent
light rain. There followed two successive sunny days, the last of the sun
until 12th. The weather continued unsettled but temperatures remained mild
for the time of year. From 12th to 16th there was a fair amount of sunshine.
Frontal activity during the afternoon of 14th brought heavy rain to the area
continuing throughout the night 14/15 (9.6mm). The weather continued
unsettled but there was some sunshine. It stayed rather mild with showers at
times. on 22nd, high pressure established itself to the west of the U.K.
This high pressure system continued to dominate the weather scene through to
the end of the month. The weather became and remained quiet, mainly cloudy
with little sunshine and plenty of anti cyclonic gloom. There were some cold
nights with some ground frosts.
The rainfall total of 47.4mm was well below the seasonal average of 72.83mm.
Driest January since 2000 16.9mm
The total sunshine hours of 81.9 were well above the seasonal average of
72.83 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 9.3˚C and minimum of 4.6˚C were both well
above their respective seasonal averages of 7.4˚ C and 2.8˚C. The warmest
January since 1993.
