SUMMARY
The weather during the month was for the first half
dominated by low pressure and for the second half, except for the last three
days when low pressure took over, by high pressure. Atmospheric pressure was
exceptionally high during the period 19th to 26th when the barometer
remained at 1040 plus millibars. During this period, although it was less
windy and it remained dry, anti‑cyclonic gloom was very much in evidence to
produce over the holiday period seven successive days when a total of just a
half an hour of sunshine was recorded. In contrast, during the
first half of the month 80% of the month's rainfall was recorded.
The month began on a wet and windy note. During the
nights 1/2 and 2/3, heavy rainfall was recorded (10.3mm's). Day
and night temperatures remained well above the seasonal average. Between the
2nd and the 4th a very deep depression tracked slowly across the northern
U.K. As a result, strong to gale force winds affected the area. It remained
very windy particularly on 11th when gale force winds with heavy rain were
recorded (13.Omm). On 16th, pressure began to rise over the Azores. There
followed a period of more settled weather. Winds moved to the
north west and became much lighter. It became noticeably cooler with ground
frosts recorded between the 18th and 22nd and a slight air frost on 21st.
The 20th was the sunniest day of the month with 7.9 hours of sunshine
recorded, but thereafter, anti‑cyclonic gloom prevailed. Low pressure
returned on 29th to end the month as it began with strong winds and rain.
The rainfall total of 84.5mm was above the seasonal average of 75.54mm.
The sunshine total of 60.9 hours fell just short of the seasonal average
of 62.3 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 10.1°C and mean minimum of 5.5°C were
both well above their seasonal averages of 8.7°C and 4.2°C respectively.

SUMMARY
The month of November was another comparatively mild
month to make the Autumn the warmest on record. With a mean maximum
temperature of 13.3°C, which was well above the seasonal average, it was the
warmest November for at least thirty five years. Sunshine hours too were
well up on the seasonal average to make it the sunniest on record.
The month began with the weather dominated by high
pressure well established over the U.K. Sunshine was in an abundance, there
were light winds, and it was dry. Night temperatures initially remained low
and there were two nights (2nd & 4th) when slight ground frosts were
recorded. This glorious spell of Autumn weather (Apart from the 8th, when no
sunshine was recorded) came to an abrupt end during the silent hours of
10/11 when a total of 5.6mm's of rain was recorded. It was dry on the 11th
but thereafter there followed 17 successive days when rain was recorded.
Barometric pressure began to fall on the 13th and the weather pattern became
one of sunshine and showers. However, the day temperatures throughout
remained generally above the seasonal average. Pressure dropped further on
the 23rd to bring strong, mainly southerly winds to the area which persisted
to the end of the month. The 29th saw an unexpected rise in barometric
pressure to give a pleasant sunny ending to the month despite the strong
winds.
The rainfall total of 67.5mm was below the seasonal
average of 74.49mm
The sunshine total of 133.8 hours was well in excess of
the seasonal average of 89.6 hours. It was the sunniest November on record.
The mean maximum temperature of 13.3°C and minimum of
7.1°C were well above their respective seasonal averages of 10.6°C and 5.4°C
making it the warmest Autumn on record.

began to rise on the 4th. Day temperatures rose above the seasonal average
and it became very warm inland. Pressure continued to rise with day and
night temperatures staying well above the normal. Weather conditions for the
Bognor Bird Man Rally were absolutely ideal with favourable winds and plenty
of sunshine. It remained dry up to the 11th when showers of rain during the
silent hours of the 11th and again the following high produced 2.7mm and
4.lmm of rain respectively. Prom then on the weather became rather unsettled

SUMMARY
Following the two previous months, which will be
remembered for their high temperatures and long spells of dry weather, the
month of August would seem to have a couple of hard acts to follow. The
first week started with much promise but thereafter the weather gradually
reverted to a normal English Summer with sunshine and showers dominating the
weather scene. However, both the mean maximum and minimum temperatures
remained above their seasonal averages. The total sunshine hours were above
the seasonal average but the total rainfall was well in excess of the norm.
So much so that the months seasonal total of 49.63mm was almost achieved
during the night of the 23rd. (47.3mm). The Meteorological Office awarded
Bognor Regis the unwelcome accolade of being the wettest place in the U.K.
on 23rd.
The month began generally warm with both day and night
temperatures keeping above or near to their seasonal averages. It was dry
and there was plenty of sunshine. The weather continued in this vein, apart
from a shower during the early hours of 9th which produced 0.9mm of rain, up
to the 11th of the month. From then on the weather became rather unsettled
and sunshine and showers became the general order of the day. A thunderstorm
during the evening of 13th was short lived and produced just 2.3mm of rain.
Day and night temperatures still stayed above the seasonal average but in
general sunshine became at times difficult to find. During the evening and
night of 23/24 frontal activity brought very heavy rain to the area. It
rained continuously from around 16.30 hours to 03.30 hours the following
morning and was particularly heavy from nine o'clock to raid‑night. There
was extensive local flooding in the area. The weather soon reverted to
sunshine and showers to produce a total of 7.7mm of rain during the silent
hours of 27/28. The month ended on a windy but dry note.
The rainfall total of 65.7mm was well above the seasonal average of
49.63mm. 2004 was wetter with 84.6mm.
The sunshine total of 245.3 hours exceeded the seasonal average of 233.2
hours 40 hours less than 2005.
The mean maximum temperature of 21.2°C and minimum
temperature of 14.3°C were both above their respective seasonal averages of
20.1°C and 13.6°C.

SUMMARY
When the month of June came
to an end, even the most optimistic would hardly have expected it to
be overshadowed by July. In fact July turned out to be noted for its
heatwave. It was the hottest July on record and the sunniest since
1911. It was also a very dry month most forecast thunderstorms
generally skirting the area. Temperatures, unlike many places
inland, were kept to below 30.0 0 C by an ever present and most
welcome daily on‑shore breeze. The month began with high pressure
dominating the weather scene. It was hot to 0 very hot, dry, with
plenty of sunshine. Temperatures inland generally topped 30.0 C plus
but it stayed much cooler on the coast. During the night 4/5 the hot
weather came to a temporary halt with the arrival of thunderstorms.
Bognor Regis collected a mere 5.8mm of rain. Elsewhere there were
flash floods causing a degree of traffic chaos. Between 6th and 9th
saw the end of the heat wave with temperatures returning to the
seasonal average and sunshine at times hard to find. Pressure began
to rise on 10th with some slight rainfall during the night 10/11.
The heat wave returned on the 16th with the weather becoming dry
with‑plenty of sunshine. It became very warm inland but stayed
cooler on the coast. The 19th produced the warmest day in the U.K.
for a hundred years with a temperature of 36°C/97°F
recorded at
Charlwood. Bognor Regis registered 28.7°C/83.7°F thanks to an
on‑shore breeze. On night 21/22 there was a fair amount of thunder
activity but with Bognor Regis on the fringe the total rainfall was
just 1.1mm. Mid‑morning of 22nd, a 30 minute thunderstorm introduced
4.8mm of rain. The hot, sunny, dry weather continued through to the
end of the month and despite a forecast of thunderstorms between
25th and 27th, just a total of 1.8mm of rain was recorded.
The rainfall total of 19.2mm was well below the seasonal average
of 42.57mm the driest July since 1999.
The sunshine total of 332.5 hours was well in excess of the
seasonal average of 239.1 hours and the sunniest July since 1911
(372.2 hours)
The mean maximum temperature
of 23.7°C and minimum of 16.5°C were both well above the seasonal
averages 20.2°C
and 13.6°C. The overall mean temperature of 20.1°C made it the
warmest July on record.

SUMMARY
The month of June often referred to as flaming
June has rarely justified this epithet over the past years. However,
June 2006 which was largely dry, warm to hot, and sunny, rewarded
the ever patient.
The month began with high pressure dominating the
weather scene. It was dry, warm, and with a reasonable amount of
sunshine. The weather continued in this vein with day temperatures
becoming very hot inland with onshore breezes keeping the littoral
much cooler. The hot weather continued with a threat of thundery
showers during the‑ night 12/13. In the event some light showers in
the early hours of the 13th produced the first rainfall of the month
(0.2mm) followed by some light rain during the evening of 13th. The
14th was a cloudy day and it was much cooler. Rain during the
evening of 14th produced a total of 4.3mm. Pressure began to drop on
18th. It became cooler and a little unsettled. The south westerly
wind increased on 19th but the weather stayed dry. There was a
slight rainfall on the night 20/21 (0.2mm). It was sunny, dry, and
warm up to the afternoon of 26th when a total of 3.6mm, of rain was
recorded. The day was just one of two days during the month when no
sunshine was recorded. Pressure rose on 26th to bring warm, dry, and
sunny weather. which continued to the end of the month.
The rainfall total of 9.1mm. was well below the
seasonal average of 48.79mm. It was the driest June since 1976 when
8.6mm was recorded.
The sunshine hours for the month of 298.9 were
well above the seasonal average of 229.2 hours. It was
the sunniest June since 1996 when 301.7 hours were recorded.
The mean maximum temperature of 19.9°C and
minimum of 12.6 C were both well above their respective seasonal
averages of 17.8°C and 11.4°C. Warmest since 2003.

SUMMARY
May was an unsettled and wet month with low
pressure areas and a series of rain bearing Atlantic weather fronts
dominating the weather scene for much of the time. Sunshine hours
were well below the seasonal average, although temperatures were
close to the seasonal average. Between the 18th and the 24th of the
month the area was subjected to a period of strong winds. Most times
the winds were gusty and in localised areas could have occasionally
reached gale force although were mainly near gale.
The month began with heavy rainfall during the
night 31/01 (15.3mm to be followed by a sunny day. It remained dry
for the first five days with above average day temperatures and a
fair amount of sunshine. Sea fog during the middle of the day
considerably reduced the sunshine on the 5th. Frontal activity
during night 7/8 brought rain to the area (6.0mm). From 9th to the
15th it was generally dry, warm, with plenty of sunshine. Frontal
activity brought heavy rain to the area during the afternoon of 16th
(6.7mm). Low pressure began to dominate the weather scene on 19th
bringing unsettled weather to the area. Between 19th and 24th the
area was subjected to strong winds and rain with sunshine in short
supply. The weather continued unsettled although pressure began to
rise towards the end of the month with a hint of some summer weather
to come.
The rainfall total of 57.2mm was well above the seasonal average
of 40.75mm, the wettest since 2002.
The sunshine total of 197.5 hours was well below the seasonal
average of 235.7 hours ‑ the dullest since 1994.
The mean maximum temperature of 15.7°C and minimum of 9.7°C were
both above their respective seasonal averages of 15.3°C and 8.7°C.
ADDENDUM
The Daily Telegraph 2nd June 2006:‑ “It was the
wettest May for 27 years with more than double the average rainfall
The Met. Office affirmed that the 4.4ins. (112.5mm) of rain that
fell across England and Wales was exceptional compared to the
seasonal average of 2.5 ins. (66.0mm). It was the wettest since
1979.11 Bognor Regis's contribution to the water shortage would
appear small by comparison.”

SUMMARY
Weatherwise the month of April was very much like
the curates egg ‑ good in parts. Both the mean maximum and minimum
temperatures were just above the seasonal averages although ground
frosts, albeit slight, were in evidence during the first eleven days
of the month. Rainfall was again below the seasonal average and
sunshine was in noticeably short supply.
The month began with Spring like weather and
plenty of sunshine. However, frontal activity during the night 1/2
brought heavy rain to the area (15.3mm). The weather cleared in the
early hours of the 2nd to return to the pleasant sunny Spring
weather. It became a little unsettled on 6th to bring sunshine and
showers to the area. The weather continued in this vein with both
day and night temperatures rather cool for the time of the year in
particular on 10th which with a maximum temperature of 9.7°C proved
to be the coolest day of the month. Snow showers were reported in
the south east of the U.K. but none of any significance occurred in
the local area. Frontal movement from the north brought rain to the
area during the afternoon of 11th. (4.4mm). The weather continued
rather unsettled although temperatures rose to become more seasonal.
There were days however when sunshine was hard to find. It remained
relatively dry with the occasional light shower until the last day
of the month when frontal activity during the night 29/30 brought
prolonged rain to the area (8.6mm).
The rainfall total of 39.1mm was below the seasonal average of
46.37mm to again bring little comfort to the water authorities.
The sunshine total of 176.3 hours was well below the seasonal
average of 192.5 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 12.8°C and
minimum of 6.2°C were both above their respective seasonal average
temperatures of 11.8°C and 5.3°C.

SUMMARY
March was for the greater part a cold
month, at times very cold, with the predominantly north east to east winds
resulting in the day and night temperatures being well below their seasonal
averages. The change to more southerly winds during the last week of the
month prevented what otherwise would have been rated as an exceptionally
cold month and finally brought to an end a winter hangover to herald the
belated arrival of spring. Sunshine hours were well below the seasonal
average and rainfall yet again well below the seasonal average.
The month began where the previous month
left off, cold, bitterly cold at times in the northerly winds. Night
temperatures continued below zero. Showers of hail were recorded on 2nd and
the odd snow flurry was in evidence. For the first six days of the month
there was plenty of sunshine and it remained dry. On 7th, it rained
throughout most of the day (9.9mm) with the day temperatures nearing double
figures. The weather continued unsettled with a distinct lack of sunshine.
From 11th, it became cooler and drier with sunshine still hard to find. The
weather stayed unsettled and it became cold in the north easterly winds. It
stayed dry through to the night 23/24 when 6.5mm, of rain were recorded to
break the sequence of a fourteen day dry period. Temperatures began to rise
with the last ground frost of the month recorded on 23rd. The weather
continued unsettled with rain recorded daily through to the end of the month
with temperatures continuing to rise and the weather taking on a more
seasonal role. Strong south westerly winds were very much in evidence during
the last five days.
The total rainfall of 48.9mm was well
below the seasonal average of 60.44mm with 80% of the month's total recorded
during the last nine days.
The sunshine total of 119.9 hours was well below the
seasonal average of 131.0 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 8.1°C and
minimum of 2.7°C were both well below their seasonal averages of 9.2°C and
4.0°C the coldest since 1987.

SUMMARY
February was overall a cool month with
both maximum and minimum temperatures below their seasonal averages. It was
also a relatively dull month with a total of some twelve completely sunless
days. Total rainfall, although marginally above the seasonal average, did
little to improve the current water shortage.
The month began with high pressure
dominating the weather scene. It was a dull and cold start to the month with
ground and air frosts recorded during the first four days. During this
period a total of just six minutes of‑sunshine was recorded. The day
temperature rose to reach double figures on the 5th and the sun finally put
in an appearance (5.9hours). Throughout it remained dry. The 6th and 7th
were both dull days and rain during the night 7/8 (0.6mm) was the first of
any to be recorded since 20th January. The 9th and 10th were both sunny
days. Front activity during the night 11/12 brought rain to the area. Rain
continued throughout the 12th turning to drizzle late in the day (7.5mm). A
deep depression moved across the U.K. during the night 14/15 bringing strong
to gale force winds and heavy rain (12.4mm) and resulting in some localised
flooding. Day temperatures were mild for the time of year. The weather
continued unsettled and on 18th, the wind moved around to the north east
bringing a large drop in temperature with ground frosts. On 19th, it rained
throughout the day and most of the night 19/20 (12.5mm). The weather
continued cold to become very cold with the occasional snow flurries. It
stayed generally dry through to the end of the month.
The total rainfall of 48.5mm was
marginally above the seasonal average of 45.9mm.
The sunshine total of 77.8 hours was below the seasonal
average of 88.3 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 6.8°C and minimum of
2.1°C were both below their respective seasonal averages of 7.2°C and 2.4°C.

SUMMARY
January was an exceptionally dry
month and did little to ease the problems of the water authorities. For the
first 20 days it was mostly dull with just a total of 23 hours of sunshine
recorded. Happily the situation changed to bring the monthly sunshine total
nearer to the seasonal average. The month was generally mild for the most
part but it became cold to very cold during
the last ten days.
The month began with high pressure
dominating the weather scene. Sunshine was hard to find and it stayed mainly
dry. On the 5th, the day temperature dropped noticeably and the night
temperature stayed fractionally above zero. Frontal activity brought rain to
the area during the 8th (9.1mm). Temperatures began to rise on the 8th to
reach double figures by day on 11th. Throughout, it was exceptionally dull
with a grand total of just 10 hours amassed since the beginning of the
month. It continued dull and relatively mild and, apart from some light
frontal activity which produced 3.2mm of rain on 17th, it remained generally
dry. Pressure began to rise on 19th and the 20th saw the first sunshine of
any significance recorded with a total of 5 hours. It stayed dry and day and
night temperatures began to gradually drop. The high pressure settled over
the U.K. and there began a cold, dry, often
sunny spell of weather. Prom the 20th to the end of the month saw a
succession of nine ground and four air frosts. It became progressively
colder with day temperatures at times influenced by the wind chill
struggling to get above freezing point. Throughout this period the wind
remained in the north east. The month ended with little sign of the cold dry
snap ending.
The rainfall total of 17.6mm was well
below the seasonal average of 72.83mm. It was the driest January since 1987
‑ 14.1mm, and 1976 ‑ 12.6mm.
The sunshine total of 71.3 hours was
surprisingly just above the seasonal average of 67.9 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 7.7°C and
minimum of 3.4°C were both just above their respective seasonal averages of
7.4°C and 2.8°C.
Finally, spare a thought for our
antipodean cousins who experienced a maximum temperature in Sydney of 40.0°C
on New Years Day.
