October weather-wise fared reasonably well in
comparison with the respective seasonal averages. Sunshine hours were well
in excess of the seasonal average. The rainfall total was comfortably below
the seasonal average. And the average maximum and minimum temperatures came
close to their seasonal averages although the average minimum was just below
its seasonal average. This was due mainly to the cold night temperatures
recorded on the last four days of the
month.
The month began with strong north-westerly winds during
the first three days of the month. Sunshine was plentiful although it was
rather cold out of the sun. On 4th, a deepening depression crossed Scotland
to bring a wet and windy day. The maximum rainfall of the month of 18.8mm
was recorded on the 4th. The total sunshine hours accumulated from 4th to
the 8th was a mere two and a half hours. From the 8th to the 12th a total of
43.2 hours of sunshine was recorded and maximum day temperatures were
equally pleasant with the sunniest day of the month being recorded with 9.7
hours on the 9th. From the 13th to the 16th the three days were dull with
little sunshine. From the 17th through to the 24th there were many sunny
days although frontal activity on the 20th and continuing through the night
20/21 brought a total of 14.9mm of rain and a nil sunshine total. On 25th
night temperatures were very low and the first ground frost of the season
was recorded at minus 0.9°C. There followed a succession of cold nights up
to the end of the month with two more ground frosts recorded on the 29th and
the 30th. Rather early for October.
The rainfall total of 59.4mm was well below the
seasonal average of 83.62mm.
The sunshine total of 158.5 hours was well above the
seasonal average of 127.9 hours.

the seasonal average of 58.49mm. 65mm were recorded on the first 9 days of
the month but the remainder of the month was almost completely dry. The
total sunshine hours for the month of 142.0 was well down on the seasonal
average of 170.5 hours making it the dullest and coolest month since 2001.
The month began with the weather rather unsettled. The
night of 1/2 produced some heavy rain (10.3mm) and the wind was fresh to
strong mainly westerly. Sunshine on the 2nd was difficult to find. On the
5th, a deep depression to the west of the U.K. moved eastwards. The
associated heavy rainfall resulted in the heaviest rainfall of the month
being recorded (28.6mm). There was some localised flooding. The afternoon of
9th saw the last of the rain for some time. The winds too were in the main
from the east and were mainly light. High pressure settled over the U.K. on
the 14th and was to last until the 28th Of the month. During this period
there were some dry sunny days and there vas talk of an Indian Summer. The
high pressure system declined rapidly on the 29th which resulted in 4.0mm of
rain being recorded on the last two days of the month, and to break a
sequence of 19 successive dry days.
The rainfall total of 69.4mm was above the seasonal
average of 58.49mm.

SUMMARY
Weather-wise the month of August was
a great disappointment for many. The total sunshine hours for the month of
169.3 compared badly with the seasonal average of 232.2 hours. It was the
dullest August since 1977 (165.4 hours). The rainfall total of 57.8mm was
above the seasonal average of 49.63mm. However, compared with the remainder
of most of the U.K.) Bognor Regis' rainfall was relatively light. August
2006 was wetter with 65.7mm. Overall, the month produced more than its fair
share of strong, and on the coast near gale force mainly westerly winds. The
average maximum day temperature at 19.8°C was the coolest since 1992
(19.2°C). However, the average minimum night temperature of 15.1°C was well
in excess of the seasonal average of 13.6°C.
The month began with the weather in an unsettled mood,
the first nine days produced a succession of daily rainfall readings albeit
the highest one reading limited to 7.6mm. Sunshine was difficult to find at
times with double figures (10.9) hours achieved on one occasion- the opening
day. Throughout this period fresh to strong mainly south-westerly winds were
much in evidence. On the night 12/13 frontal activity resulted in the
heaviest rainfall of the month being recorded (11.4mm). During the day of
12th a light hail shower was recorded. Gale force winds were forecast for
the following day on the South coast. Although the winds were very strong,
the local area was spared the worst. The following two days the wind
strength eased somewhat and the sunshine made a welcome appearance with a
total of 21.7 hours. However, the weather continued with more than the odd
shower. The bank holiday had a mixture of fine and dull weather. On the
Saturday the sunniest day of the month was recorded with 12.6 houre. On the
Monday, the Bank Holiday, saw the start of a succession of five days which
yielded a total gf just 30 minutes. The weather on 30th produced the warmest
day of the month with 23.0°C and ten hours of sunshine.
The total rainfall of 57.8mm was well above the
seasonal average of 49.63mm.
The total sunshine of 169.3 hours was well below its
seasonal average of 232.2 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of
19.8°C was below the seasonal average of 20.1°C whereas the mean minimum

SUMMARY
July was a relatively dry month with the total
rainfall just 4mm's above the seasonal average. Also, 41.0mm of the month's
total of 46.7mm's were recorded between the 6th and 9th of the month.
Sunshine hours were well above the seasonal averages albeit maximum day
temperatures exceeded the seasonal average by a mere 0.4 C. Not so night
minimum temperatures which at times were well above the seasonal average
resulting in many uncomfortable warm nights in
particular during the latter part of the month.
The month began with a dry, warm, sunny day.
Thereafter low pressure began to move over the U.K. There were strong winds
but sunshine was plentiful for the first five days of the month. On 6th
frontal activity resulted in a deterioration in the weather with four
successive days of fairly heavy rainfall with sunshine hard to find. From the
10th the weather improved with an overall increase in sunshine and it
remained dry. From the 15th, pressure was high to the south-west of the UK.
After a cloudy start the afternoon was sunny throughout. On 21st, day
temperatures rose to above the seasonal average and it became very warm. Sea
breezes kept the temperatures on the coastal strip well below those a few
miles inland which at times were hot. The weather continued warm, mainly
dry, and sunny to the end of the month although during the night 28/29 a
small amount of rain, 4.2mm, was recorded to bring to an end a period of 20
days of successive dry weather.
The total rainfall of 46.7mm was near to the seasonal
average of 42.57mm.
The sunshine total of 260.7 hours was well in excess of
the seasonal average of 239.1 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 20.6°C and minimum of
14.3°C were both above their seasonal averages of 20.2°C and 13.6°C
respectively.

well in excess of the seasonal average as were the mean maximum and minimum
temperatures. However, there were some windy days, mainly during the latter
part of the month.
The month began where the previous month left off with
a continuation of the unsettled weather. Pressure began to rise on the 4th
and for the next six days it remained dry with plenty of sunshine, and day
temperatures were at their warmest for the month. During the night 11/12
heavy showers moved through the area and continued for a large part of the
12th to produce the greatest daily rainfall total for the month with a total
of 8.1mm. Frontal activity on the night 20/21 brought 4.2mm of rain with
sunshine hard to find on the two days 20th and 21st. There after and through

SUMMARY
Day and night temperatures reached an all time high
for May during the month with the seasonal averages being exceeded by around
3.0°C. Rainfall was double the seasonal average with a total of 92.0% recorded
during the last week of the month.
The month began dry with the first two days both sunny
and warm. Sunshine then began to be hard to find. On the 6th and through to
the 13th, day and night temperatures were generally well in excess of the
seasonal average. It was dry throughout and most days were sunny. On 15th,
showers during the early hours broke a dry spell with 4.5mm of rain. Wind
direction for most of this period was from the north east to the east and,
as a result, recorded day temperatures with the on-shore sea breezes were
generally a little below those inland. During the night 24/25 frontal
activity over northern France brought heavy rain to southern England
(18.0mm). This heavy rainfall was followed on the 25th by more heavy rain
(39.8mm). The heavy rainfall caused a good deal of local flooding The
unsettled wet weather continued to the end of the month.
The rainfall total of 93.8mm was well above the
seasonal average of 40.75mm.
The sunshine total of 232.8 hours was close to the

April 2008 - 216.6 hours on 28 days.
April 2007 - 269.5 hours on 30 days.
Maximum sunshine in 24 hours - 12.7 hours on 16th.

SUMMARY
Weather-wise, the month of April was very varied with
snow, rain, wind, sunshine, and some long spells of sunshine.
The month
began on a dry note with a reasonable amount of sunshine. The westerly wind
on the 5th veered around to the north and it became noticeably cooler.
During the early hours of the 6th, snow fell in the area. The snow flakes
were heavy and soon built up a complete ground cover. The snow ceased around
mid-morning to give a reasonable sunny afternoon. The 7th was a complete
contrast to the 6th with a cloudless start to the day. Night temperatures on
5th,6th, and 7th were below zero. On the 8th settled weather resulted in a
good sunny day with over 12 hours of unbroken sunshine. The nights between
the 6th and the 10th produced a succession of ground frosts, but after a
frosty start the following days were sunny During the night 11/12, showery
activity affected the area. On the 11th and 12th, westerly winds increased
to over force 4. The winds eased on 13th to return to strength on the 17th
and to blow from the east for the next six days. Day temperatures throughout
maintained their seasonal averages. On the 19th, a deep depression over
western France resulted in a warm front moving westerly across the region to
bring outbreaks of rain on 20th. Frontal activity during the night 28/21
brought heavy rain to the region (8.2mm) On 21st and 22nd the weather became
much more Spring like and on the 26th rising pressure resulted in a
beautiful sunny day with maximum sunshine. The following day was cloudy . On
the 29th, frontal activity in association with low pressure centred over the
U.K. resulted in the heaviest rainfall of the month with a total of 28.3mm.
The month ended on a sunshine and showery note.
The total rainfall of 67.1mm was well above the
seasonal average of 46.37mm. The sunshine total of 216.6 hours was above the
season' average of 192.5 hours.
The mean maximum temperature of 12.8°C and minimum of
5.8°C were both above their respective seasonal averages of 11.8°C and 5 3°C

SUNSHINE
March 2008 - 126.7 Hours. March 2007 - 199.9 Hours.
Most sunshine in 24 hours - 10.9 hours on 27th.
January to March 2008 - 331.8 hours. January to March
2007 - 292.3 hours.
SUMMARY
March will be remembered mainly for the arctic
conditions which prevailed during the earliest Easter for some 90 years.
However, overall the rainfall total was within a quarter of a millimetre of
the seasonal average and the sunshine total and day and night temperatures
were close to their seasonal averages.
The month
began mainly dry and with plenty of sunshine for the first two days.
Thereafter it got progressively colder with the coldest night of the month
on the 5th with an air frost of -1.0°C. It remained dry and sunshine was
very much in evidence. During the night 7/8 a deep depression began forming
to the west of the U.K. Associated frontal activity produced 3.5mm of rain
to break a fairly dry spell. During the night 9/10 there was a large
pressure drop as the depression covered the U.K. A barometric pressure of
973 millibars brought gale force winds and heavy rain to the area. The
strong winds caused some local damage. The 12th was a much calmer day with a
fair amount of sunshine. The following four days were dull with showers. On
17th it turned colder with a succession of ground frosts albeit mainly light
up to the 25th. Winds were strong from the north -east and localised showers
of snow or sleet were a common occurrence. The weather became more settled
from the 25th and remained so until the end of the month.
The
rainfall total of 60.2mm was close to the seasonal average of 60.4mm.
The
sunshine total of 126.7 hours was just short of the seasonal average of
131.0 hours.
The mean
maximum temperature of 10.3°C and minimum of 4.6°C were both above their
respective seasonal averages of 9.2°C and 4.0°C.

SUMMARY
This February was the sunniest on record with more than
double the seasonal average. There was also a succession of warm days albeit
usually following a cold and most times frosty start. Rainfall was well
below the seasonal average with a notable dry spell from 6th to 24th.The
month began with cold north westerly winds dominating the weather scene. The
night 1/2 was frosty but the two opening days were both dry and sunny. From
3rd. to 5th. it was mainly sunshine and showers with the latter occurring
mainly during the afternoons. On 6th, a ridge of high pressure crossed the
U.K. bringing dry and sunny weather. The high pressure remained over the
U.K. or just to the east from 7th through to the 20th to give a succession
of dry sunny days, cold frosty nights, and an ever present daily cold
easterly to north easterly wind. On the 20th,the wind veered to the west.
The weather turned more cloudy and it was warmer during the silent hours.
The weather remained more changeable to the end of the month and most of the
months total rainfall of 26.7mm was recorded during the final six days
(13.8mm).
The rainfall total for the month was 26.7mm and was
well below the seasonal average of 72.83mm.
The sunshine total of 150.4 hours, well above the
seasonal average of 67.9 hours. The sunniest February since 1988
which previously stood as the sunniest since records
began with a total of 143.7 hours.
The main maximum temperature of 10.2°C and minimum of
3.5°C were both well above their respective seasonal averages
of 7.2°C and 2.4°C.

SUNSHINE
January
2008 - 54.7 hours on 18 days.
January 2007
- 73.2 hours on 23 days.
Maximum sunshine in 24 hours - 7.3 hours on 27th.
SUMMARY
January was
a very wet month, in fact the wettest since 1995. It was also short of
sunshine - the dullest since 1983. Temperatures both day and night were well
above
the seasonal
average - one of the sixth warmest Januarys of the last 100 years.
The month
began on a cloudy note, it was mild and sunshine was in short supply. On the
2nd, a strong cold easterly wind affected the area and registered the
coldest day of the month. The weather continued to be unsettled with
frequent showers of rain and very little sunshine. During the silent hours
of 5/6, a ridge of high pressure moved through the area to bring some
sunshine but also frequent showers. From the 8th to the 21st it was a very
windy period and, in particular south westerly gales on 15th and heavy falls
of rain resulted in a great deal of local flooding. Day temperatures however
were mild, remaining in double figures throughout. Sunshine was hard to find
and the total hours recorded between the 13th and the 23rd stood at under 10
hours.
Atmospheric pressure rose on the 22nd
to give a dry, sunny day with virtually wall to
wall
sunshine. Pressure continued to rise with an anti-cyclone building up south
west of the U.K. It stayed dry and it was less windy. In the early hours of
the 30th, a
cold front
passed through the area to produce 3.7mm of rain and to break a sequence of
five
dry days. The month ended with a sunless and wet day producing a further
8.9mm
of rain.
The rainfall total of 113.5mm was well in excess of the seasonal average of
72.83
millimeters - the wettest since 1995. (168.5mm.
The sunshine total of 54.7 hours was below the seasonal average
of
67.9 hours -
the dullest since 1983 (49.8 hours)
The mean
maximum temperature of 9.9°C and minimum of 5.2°C were both well above their
respective seasonal averages of 7.9°C and 2.8°C.
