SUMMARY
The month of November was a wet one with a total rainfall of 203.5mm.
This was well in excess of the seasonal average of 74.49mm, and is
probably the heaviest monthly total recorded since records began. On the
somewhat credit side though the mean maximum temperature of 13.4°c, and
minimum temperature of 8.0°C were well above the seasonal averages of
10.6°c and 5.4°c respectively.
The month began with a rapidly deepening depression tracking northeast
across the UK on the 15th bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the
area. The rainfall eased up on the 3rd with rain showers becoming a
daily occurrence. A vigorous south westerly airflow covered the British
Isles on the 11th and continued to the 24th. Heavy rain affected all
parts of the country at frequent intervals and it was very windy at
times. A deep depression on the 13th/14th brought the first gale of the
season to southern Britain and the heaviest rainfall of the month at
50.1mm. Between the 18th and the 20th a warm conveyor originating in the
sub tropics delivered prolonged heavy rain to the upland western
districts; the downpour was heaviest over Cumbria triggering destructive
floods, the heaviest rainfall on record in the country. Heavy frequent
showers continued to complete Bognor's record rainfall total

SUMMARY
The month of October was overall a relatively warm month with the
average maximum temperature at 16.1°C and average minimum temperature of
10.2°C, both well above their seasonal averages. Average rainfall of
81.5MM was close to the seasonal average of 83.6MM, and sunshine at
108.9 hours was below the seasonal average of 127.9 hours.
The month began on a warm and sunny note with the highest maximum for
the month being recorded at 19.1°C on the 1st, however the warm spell
turned out to be short lived when a succession of rainy days amassed a
total of 56.2mm of rain, including the largest daily rainfall total for
the month of 32.6mm
For the next 10 days it was relatively dry and there were some sunny
days. Pressure rose steadily across the country on the 11th and 12th and
an anti-cyclone covered the UK from then until the 18th. The first sub
zero temperature of the month was recorded on the grass on the 18th. The
12th was mostly sunny (8.3 hours), but low cloud and local drizzle
became embedded in the circulation of the high pressure system
thereafter. From the 26th a broad southerly flow covered the UK and the
weather was rather warm but rather muggy and the sunshine was in short
supply.

Summary
The early days of September led many to believe we were in for an early
descent into autumn, but from the 5th the month redeemed itself. The first
four days of the month were cool with gentle winds. There was a broad belt
of rain active across the UK during the 2nd and 3rd, between the 5th and 8th
a — cyclone crossed France and Germany and pressure rose sharply over
England and Wales. Temperatures became very warm in eastern, central and
southern counties of England. A rise of pressure led to the establishment of
an intense anti — cyclone over the UK from the 9th to the 19th. From the
20th pressure remained high over England and Wales while conditions were dry
with fair, warm days.
As September gave way to October many areas had no measurable rain for at
least 28 days.

SUMMARY
August was a dry, warm month and with the top barometric pressure recorded
for the month of 1023.8 milli-bars and the lowest recorded was 1009.4 milli-bars
the weather had all the makings of a dry stable month. The average maximum
temperature of 21.2°C was well above the seasonal average of 20.1°C. So too
was the mean minimum of 14.4°C which was well above the minimum temperature
of 13.6°C the seasonal average. The seasonal average of rainfall of 49.63mm
was greatly exceeded by the monthly average of 21.6 mm. The Sunshine average
of 198.5 Hours fell a little short of the seasonal average of 232.2 hours.
The weather for the month of August carried on where the previous month left
off with warm and sunny dry days. The warmest day of the month was recorded
at 24.0°C and was registered on the 6th. However on the 7th, cloud built up
during the afternoon to bring continuous rain to the area for the rest of
the day to register the highest rainfall of the month with 9.3mm.
Thereafter, rainfall was relatively light through to the end of the month.
Many people have queried the quality of our recent Summer. For statistical
purposes we should note that the Summer quarter comprises June, July and
August. Over the season, the mean temperature was above the standard
reference period 1971 - 2000 in all parts of Britain by 1 to 2 degrees. The
underlying warming trend in our climate has resulted in 17 of the last 21
Summers being warmer than the 1971-2000 average. It was a wet Summer in most
parts of the country, with much of Scotland and Northern Ireland reporting
rainfall above the long term average. But in parts of East Anglia and Kent
there was rather less rain than usual, thanks to long dry periods in June
and August.

almost unbroken sunshine in many places. The anti-cyclone responsible had
retreated to Iceland by the 3rd. allowing much cooler Arctic air to
penetrate from the north and north - east. On the 7th an occlusion brought
rain to the area during the silent hours, in fact at 12.8mm the heaviest
fall in 24 hours. Although threatened with the likely hood of frequent
showers it remained relatively dry up to the 26th of the month. By the 23rd

frequent intervals. The heaviest rainfall recorded during the month occurred
